The Biggest Impact of your Style is your Kitchen

The biggest impact of your style is your kitchen. You want it to be functional and organized for your life.

Last week, I was discussing my kitchen renovation with my parents… I could not believe it will be coming up on two years since I did it. Being a Certified Kitchen and Bath Designer, I am aware of the cost that goes into a kitchen remodel. Someday I will be doing my dream kitchen remodel, I just could not justify it right now having a college student.

An average kitchen remodel is $50,000…. I know HGTV has it costing a lot less but what you don’t see behind the scenes are the homeowners doing the labor of the work (demo of cabinets, demo of countertops, installing the cabinets, etc.)… You are probably thinking it can not cost that much and again it’s an average. I have seen some cost slightly less because of not re-doing the flooring or not buying new appliances and have seen it cost a lot more up to $150,000… Remember it’s more than your cabinets that are involved in a kitchen remodel.

I enjoy educating my clients about the cost of a kitchen remodel and letting them know what’s all involved. Let’s just think about it… You want to redo your kitchen. You probably know you are going to be purchasing new cabinets and countertops. How about your flooring? Is this flooring continuous throughout your main-floor or do you have a couple of different flooring styles? Now would be the time to redo your flooring. Also, your backsplash… What materials will you be using for your backsplash? Will it be tile or the same material you use for your countertop?

Next, let’s talk about appliances… Now would be the time to replace your range, refrigerator, and microwave-hood. What are you thinking about for your appliances? Have you done your research? Do you know what appliances you want or are you looking for guidance? How about your lighting? Are you finally going to have your dream island? You probably are thinking about some beautiful pendants (hanging lights) framing that island. So, as you can see the kitchen remodel has a wonderful domino effect on your entire home. You will be purchasing new cabinets, countertops, backsplash, appliances, flooring, lighting, and paint for your new kitchen walls. When you add all these costs up plus the labor and demo, maybe removing a wall, or making a pass-through larger, you can see how one spends $50,000 on such a project. These are the items involved for an average kitchen remodel.

Knowing this information, I painted my kitchen cabinets and kitchen walls. I have plastic laminate countertop and it’s in great condition. I do want to replace it eventually and held off knowing that if I touched the countertop, I would have to redo the tile backsplash. So then, why am I not redoing my kitchen?. It’s a beautiful domino effect. I lived with my dark stained Oak cabinetry for 7 years. I no longer wanted to work, cook, or be in my kitchen. I knew it was time for a change…

How about you? Are you ready for a kitchen change? What are you thinking about; a kitchen renovation like I did or the kitchen remodel?
