What Appliances should I Purchase for my Kitchen?

This question is a doozy… There are sooo many choices out there plus it depends on multiple factors. Let’s discuss the necessary factors about your appliances and kitchen layout…

First: Are you redesigning your kitchen layout or keeping it the same? If keeping it the same, do you really like the microwave-hood or over-the-range microwave you currently have in your kitchen layout? I currently have a microwave-hood in my kitchen. I do not like it because it’s too high for me and does not remove the odor or steam from my kitchen when we are cooking. We (yes, my husband cooks) do not make juicy fabulous burgers or fry fish in our house because the smell lasts too long, even with an air purifier. If you notice the higher end appliances (Miele, Wolf, etc.) do not have microwave-hoods. They know it’s not an appliance to be combined because you will be sacrificing its function. One of my clients who originally had the microwave-hood changed it out to a standard hood and moved the microwave to a different location. Also, by relocating the microwave you are no longer in the cook’s working zone/area. I have placed the microwave in tall cabinets and base cabinets to accommodate the family’s lifestyle.

Second: Are you going to be adding any appliances to your new kitchen layout? One of my clients went to an appliance store and selected all their appliances (refrigerator, dishwasher, range, microwave, and hood liner). They decided on the black stainless-steel finish from LG because she was sick of cleaning fingerprints off the refrigerator, and this finish keeps fingerprints off. For the dishwasher, they decided on a custom-panel-ready, so it will blend seamlessly with the cabinets. When they were ready to purchase the appliances, they noticed a 6”W wine cooler. Yes, that’s right only 6”W… So, they added it to their list… When I review your appliance list I look for two things: 1) if anything has been added and 2) if any dimensions have been changed. Since the cabinets are not ordered yet, now is the time to make revisions. Think of what is important to you with the appliances you selected... Is it the amazing finish you love or the size of the range?

Third: Are you going to be changing your appliances sizes? Maybe going to an 18”W dishwasher… or going to a full-size refrigerator and full-size freezer… or going with a wider range… Remember, this is crucial information your Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer needs to know because we are designing your kitchen around these appliances. My client decided to go with a full-size refrigerator & full-size freezer based on value and efficiency. This client does not have kids running around his house anymore, but he does have grandchildren. He also did not want to invest in a refrigerator and freezer knowing it will only last 7 years tops. He is aware that the higher-end appliance manufacturers are more expensive in the beginning but will be saving you money because they last longer.

When it comes to selecting appliances it will depend on your kitchen layout, if you are adding appliances, and changing their sizes. A Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer will be designing your cabinetry around your new appliances. By collaborating together, we will help you evaluate the best options for your lifestyle and well-being. The Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer will provide you with a beautiful and updated kitchen you can be proud of for years to come.
